Nguru
Yobe, Nigeria
Why visit Nguru?
Nguru is a market town in Yobe State and one of Nigeria's major collecting points for gum arabic, groundnut, cotton, meat, hides, and skins. It sits at the edge of the Nguru wetlands, part of the wider Hadejia-Nguru wetlands system on the southern fringe of the Sahel — a Ramsar-recognised "Wetland of International Importance" that once covered roughly 3,000 km² and supports over 250 species of flowering plants and 378 species of birds, hosting between 200,000 and 325,000 waterbirds including Palearctic migrants that winter there.
