Adamawa State is a large, ethnically diverse state in north-eastern Nigeria, sharing a long eastern border with Cameroon. Its landscape is defined by highland plateaus, mountain ranges (the Atlantika, Mandara, and Shebshi), and river valleys carved by the Benue and Gongola rivers. The state is home to Nigeria's largest national park, Gashaka Gumti, a vast wilderness of savannah, montane forest, and steep escarpments. Its capital, Yola, and its twin city Jimeta form the main gateway, while the university town of Mubi in the north is a major commercial hub.
The state is one of Nigeria's most heterogeneous, with over 100 indigenous ethnic groups including the Fulani, Hausa, Bata, and Mbula. The dominant occupation is farming, and Adamawa is known for its abundance of food crops. The state also has a deep history: the Sukur Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mandara Mountains, preserves an ancient iron-smelting settlement with terraced fields and a chief's palace that has been continuously inhabited under the same land-management system for over 400 years.
Travel to Adamawa is a journey into the rugged landscapes of Nigeria's far east, but visitors should be aware that parts of the state have been impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency, particularly the Mubi area. The dry season (November–April) is the best time for travel, when roads are passable and the park is most accessible.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable and practical time to visit. The Harmattan winds (December–February) bring dusty but cooler conditions. The rainy season (May–October) brings heavy downpours, especially August–September, making some roads difficult. The Njuwa Fishing Festival near Yola typically takes place in April when lake waters recede.

Yola International Airport (YOL) connects Adamawa to Lagos, Akure, and other major cities. Several bus companies (The Young Shall Grow Motors, GUO Transport) run services from Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and other state capitals to Yola. Within the state, shared buses and taxis connect major towns like Mubi, Numan, and Ganye. Motorcycle taxis (okada) and tricycles (keke) are ubiquitous for short-distance travel. The main highway (A4/A13) runs south from Yola to Numan and on to Taraba State.

Adamawa's cuisine reflects Fulani and Chamba traditions. Staple grains include millet and guinea corn, used for porridges and masa (fried millet cakes with yoghurt). Dabra/Dabura is a rich dish made from groundnut paste and cassava. Margi Special is a hearty fish soup from the riverine areas with yakuwa (African sorrel) leaves. Miya Kuka is a nutritious soup made from baobab leaves. Kilishi (spicy dried meat) and suya (skewered grilled meat) are popular snacks. The Jimeta Ultra Modern Market and Yola Market are good places to sample local food.
What is the culture like?
The Njuwa Fishing Festival (April, no fixed date) is a colourful two-day event by the Buatiye (Bata) people, featuring traditional dances, competitive running, tug-of-war, boat racing, and fishing competitions. Other festivals include Kuchichep in Takum, the Ibi Fishing Festival, and the Vunon wrestling festival near Numan.
