Aroab

//Karas, Namibia

Why visit Aroab?

Aroab is a village of around 2,650 people in the ǁKaras Region, roughly 170 km southeast of Keetmanshoop on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, where annual rainfall averages just 150-200 mm. It traces its settlement history to 1900, when two men of German descent traded the land from an indigenous Nama tribe for sheep and rifles, later splitting it into Aroab and the adjoining ranch of Streitdamm after a dispute over a dam. Today the district centre's economy runs on surrounding sheep, goat, and cattle ranching.
