Why visit Berseba?
Berseba is a village in the ǁKaras Region, about 100 km northwest of Keetmanshoop near the Brukkaros Mountain, and district capital of the Berseba constituency, home to some 9,000 predominantly Nama-speaking residents across the village and nearby settlements. Its original Khoikhoi name was !Autsawises; Khoi herder clans driven north across the Orange River settled here from 1812, and in 1850 their leader Paul Goliath became independent chief of the community, which came to be known as the Berseba Orlam. The Rhenish Missionary Samuel Hahn founded a mission station here on 17 October 1850, giving the settlement its biblical name, and a church was built in 1857. Namibia's first diamond was found in the area in 1898.
