Overview

//Karas is the southernmost region of Namibia, a vast and starkly beautiful landscape of desert plains, rocky mountains, and the spectacular Fish River Canyon — the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. The region is named after the Karas Mountains that rise from the surrounding plains. Its remote character and extreme landscapes make it a destination for adventurers and those seeking solitude.

The regional capital, Keetmanshoop, is the main service centre. The historic port town of Lüderitz, with its striking German colonial architecture and colourful houses, is a highlight. The diamond-mining town of Oranjemund on the Orange River border with South Africa is another destination of interest. The Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park spans the border between Namibia and South Africa, protecting the dramatic Fish River Canyon and the rugged Richtersveld landscapes.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the cooler months from April to October. The Fish River Canyon hiking trail is only open during the winter months (May to September) due to extreme summer heat. Summer (November to March) can be extremely hot, especially inland.

Getting Around

The B1 highway runs through the region connecting Keetmanshoop to Windhoek and the South African border. The B4 connects Keetmanshoop to Lüderitz. The C10, C12, and C13 provide access to other towns. Most roads are paved or well-maintained gravel. A 4x4 is recommended for exploring the canyon area and desert tracks.
