Mogok

Mandalay, Myanmar

Why visit Mogok?

Mogok is a remote valley town in the mountains of northern Mandalay Region, approximately 200 km northeast of Mandalay. It is world-famous as the source of some of the finest rubies and sapphires ever mined — the "Mogok Ruby" is legendary in the gem world. The town sits in a scenic valley surrounded by forested hills and has a cooler climate than the central Myanmar plains.

Note: Mogok is a restricted zone. Foreigners require a special permit to visit, which must be arranged through a licensed tour operator. The area is heavily controlled due to the gem trade. The cool season (November–February) is the best time to visit.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Mandalay International Airport (MDL) is 200 km southwest. A taxi from the airport to Mogok costs around 80,000–100,000 kyat and takes 5–6 hours, including permit checkpoint stops.

By Car / Road

Mogok is reached by road from Mandalay via Pyin Oo Lwin (200 km, 5–6 hr). The road winds through the Shan hills and is paved but narrow in sections. A 4WD vehicle or shared taxi is the standard way to reach the valley. All foreign visitors must have a permit arranged in advance.

The town is walkable. Motorcycle taxis are available. Most visitors are driven by their guide or tour company.

What are the things to do?

  • Mogok Gem Market: The famous gem market where rough and polished rubies and sapphires are traded — a fascinating cultural experience (morning hours).

  • Ruby Mines: The surrounding hills are dotted with ruby mines — some can be visited with a guide.

  • Mogok Lake: A small lake in the centre of the valley, surrounded by temples and monasteries.

  • Phonkan (Spire Pagoda): A pagoda on the ridge overlooking the valley with panoramic views.

  • Paleik Pagoda: A prominent pagoda south of the lake with a large Buddha image.

  • Gem Shopping: The main reason to visit — buy directly from miners and traders (expert knowledge essential to avoid fakes).

  • Valley Views: The viewpoints around the valley rim offer spectacular vistas of the gem valley.

  • Market Visits: The morning market is where miners and traders gather.
