Malchin

Malchin is a small settlement (soum centre) in Uvs Province, western Mongolia. The name "Malchin" means "herder" in Mongolian, reflecting the district's primary economic activity. The area lies within the Uvs Nuur Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique combination of desert, steppe, wetland, and mountain ecosystems.

The climate is extremely continental: winters are among the coldest in Mongolia, with January temperatures often dropping below -35°C. Summers are warm but short. Precipitation is very low. June to August is the best time to visit.

Malchin offers a base for exploring the Uvs Nuur Basin's diverse landscapes and wildlife, including the Uvs Nuur lake itself and the surrounding protected areas.

Malchin is connected by unpaved roads to Ulaangom. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. From Ulaanbaatar, the trip is a multi-day journey across Mongolia.

The village is walkable. A 4WD vehicle is needed to reach the lake and protected areas.

• Uvs Nuur — Mongolia's largest lake (3,350 km²), a hypersaline body of water that serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds.

• Uvs Nuur Basin — A globally significant UNESCO World Heritage site containing all major Central Asian ecosystem types.

• Sand Dunes — The Altan Els sand dunes, part of the basin, offer a desert landscape unique in Mongolia.

• Birdwatching — Uvs Nuur hosts migratory ducks, geese, swans, and shorebirds. Dalmatian pelicans and black storks are also present.

• Hiking — The basin's varied terrain provides good hiking opportunities.

• Photography — The stark, dramatic landscapes of the basin are a photographer's dream.

Malchin has a basic shop selling food staples, drinks, and essential supplies. Herders in the area may sell fresh milk, cheese, and meat. The provincial capital Ulaangom (accessible by road) has the closest proper market with a full range of goods.
