About Malchin
Malchin is a small settlement (soum centre) in Uvs Province, western Mongolia. The name "Malchin" means "herder" in Mongolian, reflecting the district's primary economic activity. The area lies within the Uvs Nuur Basin, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique combination of desert, steppe, wetland, and mountain ecosystems.
The climate is extremely continental: winters are among the coldest in Mongolia, with January temperatures often dropping below -35°C. Summers are warm but short. Precipitation is very low. June to August is the best time to visit.

Fly to Ulaangom Airport from Ulaanbaatar, then drive overland to Malchin.

Malchin is connected by unpaved roads to Ulaangom. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. From Ulaanbaatar, the trip is a multi-day journey across Mongolia.
The village is walkable. A 4WD vehicle is needed to reach the lake and protected areas.
