Tarialan
Uvs, Mongolia
Why visit Tarialan?
Tarialan is a small settlement (soum centre) in Uvs Province, western Mongolia, located in the broad basin between the Altai and Khangai mountain ranges. The area is part of the Great Lakes Depression, characterized by dry steppe, salt pans, and the dramatic Uvs Nuur basin. Tarialan serves as a rural service centre for the surrounding herding population.
The climate is extremely continental: very cold winters with temperatures below -30°C are common, and summers are short but can reach 30°C. Precipitation is very low, as the surrounding mountains create a rain shadow effect. June through August is the most comfortable period for travel.
Tarialan is off the main tourist route and offers an unvarnished experience of Mongolia's western frontier. The nearby Uvs Nuur Basin is a UNESCO World Heritage site encompassing a remarkable variety of ecosystems in a single closed drainage basin.
