Uvs is the far northwestern province of Mongolia, sharing a long border with the Tuvan Republic of Russia and lying within the Great Lakes Depression — a self-contained watershed of saline and freshwater lakes ringed by mountains. The province is named for Uvs Lake (Uvs Nuur), the largest lake by surface area in Mongolia: a vast, intensely salty inland sea that supports no fish but draws huge numbers of migratory birds. The wider Uvs Nuur Basin, spanning the Mongolia–Russia border, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its remarkable range of ecosystems compressed into a small area.
This is a land of extremes. Uvs is generally regarded as the coldest province in Mongolia, with winter temperatures plunging toward −45°C in the basin, yet summers can climb above +40°C in the same valleys. Around the lakes the terrain feels almost desert-like, while the Kharkhiraa and Türgen massifs rise to glacier-fed twin peaks above 3,900 metres. Standing stones, petroglyphs and burial mounds left by Turkic, Tuvan and other ancient peoples are scattered through the valleys and passes.
Culturally, Uvs is the homeland of the Dörvöd (Dorvod) Oirat Mongols, with significant Tuvan and Bayad communities and other tribes besides. It is also tied to modern Mongolian history as the birthplace of the People's Republic's last two leaders, Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal and Jambyn Batmönkh. The provincial capital, Ulaangom, sits beneath Red Mountain on the southern shore approaches of Uvs Lake and serves as the practical base for exploring this remote, scenic corner.
When to Visit
Travel to Uvs is realistically a summer activity: June through early September. July and August are warmest and the season when herders' gers, lake shores and mountain valleys are green and accessible — though the basin can still feel scorchingly hot by day. Ulaangom's Naadam Festival is held on 9–10 July, the clearest fixed date in the provincial calendar.
Winter is the defining weather quirk here: as the coldest province in the country, Uvs sees the lake basin act as a frost pocket where extreme cold settles for months. Roads and high passes around the Kharkhiraa–Türgen mountains become very difficult or impassable. Spring brings dust and unstable river crossings from snowmelt. For migratory birdlife around Uvs Lake and Achit Nuur, late spring and early autumn passage periods are rewarding, but you must be prepared for sudden cold.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Uvs is one of Mongolia's harder regions to move around in. Ulaangom is the hub, and shared jeeps and vans connecting the soums and neighbouring aimags gather around the city; vehicles tend to leave the villages in the morning for Ulaangom and return in the afternoon. There is no rail in the province.
The most-used inter-city link is the rough overland route between Ulaangom and Hovd: a shared jeep or van runs most days and takes about ten hours, including a dinner stop at a small countryside café. For Bayan-Ölgii and the Altai parks, regional travel advice favours routing via Hovd rather than directly, as Hovd is the west's transport hub. Long-distance coaches connect Ulaangom with Ulaanbaatar (roughly 24–28 hours) and there are flights from Ulaangom Airport (ULO) to the capital.
Within Ulaangom most things are walkable from Tsedenbal Square — the bus station, Wrestling Palace and Red Mountain are all 10–25 minutes on foot. For mountain and lake excursions, hiring a private jeep with driver is essentially mandatory; arrange it through your hotel or in town, and confirm route, fuel and the number of days before departing.

- Uliastai — one of Mongolia's three pre-20th-century towns, with Manchu-fort ruins and a strong regional museum.
- Altai Tavan Bogd National Park — the "Five Saints" peaks, Potanin Glacier and a UNESCO-listed petroglyph complex.

WhatsAppCuisine
The food of Uvs is classic western Mongolian herder fare, with a strong Dörvöd Oirat character: boiled mutton and goat, noodle soups, steamed buuz and fried khuushuur, all accompanied by dairy — aaruul (dried curds), clotted cream, yoghurt and salty milk tea (süütei tsai). In summer, fermented mare's milk (airag) flows in the countryside. The province's Tuvan communities and the Kazakhs of neighbouring Bayan-Ölgii bring additional dishes, including horse-meat preparations.
Ulaangom has a modest dining scene rather than a culinary one. Onkhruush, a coffee shop and bakery in town, is a pleasant stop for cakes, biscuits and good coffee. Otherwise expect simple Mongolian guanz canteens around the centre. Note that Uvs Lake is too saline to yield any fish — freshwater fish in the region come instead from lakes such as Achit Nuur. Vegetarians should stock up on produce in Ulaangom; meat-free meals are scarce in the soums.
Culture & Festivals
The fixed cultural anchor is Naadam, held in Ulaangom on 9–10 July at the Naadam Stadium, with wrestling, horse racing and archery. The Wrestling Palace (Bökhiin Örgöö) hosts Mongolian wrestling alongside basketball, volleyball and martial-arts tournaments through the year, often drawing teams from other western aimags. The Oirat Theatre in Ulaangom stages occasional concerts and plays by local and national artists, usually announced a week or two ahead.
Uvs's identity is bound up with the Dörvöd, Bayad and Tuvan peoples, each with distinct dress, song and craft traditions; the Uvs Aimag Museum displays the province's ethnic groups, wildlife and archaeological finds, plus a wing devoted to native son Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal. The landscape itself is a cultural record — petroglyphs, Turkic standing stones and burial mounds mark the valleys, alongside the partially revived Dechinravjaalin Khiid monastery, founded in 1757.

WhatsAppNotable Experiences
- Stand on the shore of Uvs Lake (Uvs Nuur), Mongolia's largest lake by area — a saline inland sea in a UNESCO World Heritage basin, best for sweeping desert-and-water vistas and birdlife.
- Climb Red Mountain (Ulaan Uul) at the edge of Ulaangom for a panorama taking in the whole city, Uvs Lake and the Kharkhiraa range — by concrete staircase or a hidden stone path to the summit.
- Trek the twin peaks of Kharkhiraa Uul (4,037 m) and Türgen Uul (3,965 m), glacier-fed mountains that anchor multi-day hiking and horse treks.
- Visit the Uvs Aimag Museum, including its Tsedenbal wing, to understand the province's ethnic mosaic and 20th-century political history.
- Cross into the Bayan-Ölgii Altai for the eagle-hunting Kazakhs and the UNESCO petroglyphs of Altai Tavan Bogd — Uvs makes a logical first leg of a western circuit.
