Buir Lake
Dornod, Mongolia
Why visit Buir Lake?
Buir Lake (Buir Nuur) is a large freshwater lake in the far southeast of Dornod province, straddling the border between Mongolia and Inner Mongolia, China — the greater part of the lake lies on the Mongolian side. It is the biggest lake in eastern Mongolia, shallow and rich in fish, set in flat open steppe near the Khalkhin Gol river system. For travellers it offers a rare combination in this dry region: a sizeable body of water, sandy and grassy shoreline, abundant birdlife, and the deep quiet of the remote eastern grasslands.
The lake has long supported fishing and herding communities, and it sits in country steeped in history — the surrounding steppe is associated with early Mongol history and lies close to the 1939 Khalkhin Gol battlefield. Buir Lake is a noted spot for waterbirds and migrating species, and its waters are productive for fish. There is no town on the Mongolian shore; the lake is experienced as a remote camping and wildlife destination.
The climate is sharply continental. Summer (June to August) is the practical season — warm, good for birdlife and the only comfortable time for the long overland journey. Winters are extremely cold and the lake freezes. Visit in summer and come fully self-sufficient.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The nearest provincial airport is Choibalsan (IATA: COQ), several hundred kilometres to the northwest.
By Car / Road
Access is by road only, on long unpaved tracks across the eastern steppe. Buir Lake is reached overland from Choibalsan with a 4x4 and a driver-guide who knows the route — typically a long day's drive. It is often combined with a visit to the nearby Khalkhin Gol battlefield. Carry extra fuel, water and supplies. There is no scheduled bus service; visits are made on private or organised trips. Note that this is a sensitive border area — check whether any permit is needed.
There is no public transport. Movement around the lake is on foot along the shoreline or by the 4x4 that brought you. Distances are large and there are no fixed fares — transport is part of your tour or private hire.
What are the things to do?
Buir Lake shoreline — Sandy and grassy banks and wide open water, attracting geese, ducks, gulls and other waterbirds, especially during migration.
Surrounding eastern steppe — Flat, vast grassland with herder camps and grazing livestock.
Birdwatching — The lake is a notable spot for waterbirds and migrating species; bring binoculars.
Fishing — Buir Lake is productive for fish; ask locally about permits and access before fishing.

Combine with Khalkhin Gol — Pair a lake visit with the 1939 battlefield memorials nearby.
Stargazing — Very dark skies over the eastern steppe.

There are no restaurants at the lake. Meals are self-catered or prepared by a tour cook — simple Mongolian fare of mutton, noodles, rice and bread, sometimes supplemented with fresh fish from the lake. Carry all the food you need, including vegetarian staples if required.
Where to drink?
Do not drink lake or stream water untreated. Carry all the bottled or treated water you will need for the trip. Tour cooks typically provide suutei tsai (salted milk tea) and hot drinks.
