Varnita

Anenii Noi, Moldova

Why visit Varnita?

Varnița is a rural commune of 5,105 people in Anenii Noi District, located in southeastern Moldova on the western bank of the Dniester River. The village borders the city of Bender (Tighina). While Bender is controlled by the breakaway Transnistrian authorities, Varnița remains under Moldovan central government administration. This positioning creates a distinct border zone surrounded by Moldovan police checkpoints, Transnistrian border posts, and Joint Control Commission peacekeeping stations.

The settlement is known for its role in European military history. Between 1709 and 1713, King Charles XII of Sweden established his headquarters and military camp here after losing the Battle of Poltava. The Swedish camp, dubbed "Karlopolis," housed thousands of Swedish troops and royal court members. In February 1713, Ottoman forces attacked the compound during the skirmish known as the Kalabalik of Bender, capturing the king. A stone memorial obelisk erected in 1925 marks the site of the former camp.

Varnița has a humid continental climate (Dfa). Summers from June through August bring average high temperatures between 27°C and 30°C (81–86°F), with occasional heat spikes above 35°C (95°F). Winters from December to February are cold and dry, with daily highs around 0°C (32°F) and night freezing down to −5°C (23°F). Annual precipitation is approximately 500 mm (19.7 inches), concentrated primarily in summer thundershowers.
