Okat
Kosrae, Micronesia
Why visit Okat?
Okat is a small municipality on the northwest coast of Kosrae's main island, in the easternmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia. It is best known as the site of Kosrae International Airport (KSA), the island's only air gateway, and as the gateway to Kosrae's northern and western coast. The settlement itself is a modest scatter of houses, a few village stores, and coconut and breadfruit groves — most visitors pass through rather than stay, but Okat offers a quiet slice of Kosraean village life away from the busier areas around Tofol and Lelu.
Kosrae — the "Sleeping Lady" — is deeply Congregationalist Christian, and Okat observes Sunday as a full day of rest. Visitors are expected to dress modestly away from the beach, keep noise down on Sundays, and ask before photographing people. There is no nightlife, essentially no traffic, and effectively no crime.
The climate is tropical and wet year-round, with daytime temperatures of roughly 27–31 °C (81–88 °F) and high humidity. The slightly drier window runs from about January to April; the latter half of the year is wetter, with rain possible at any time.

By Plane
Kosrae International Airport (KSA) is in Okat, served by United Airlines' "Island Hopper" route (Honolulu–Majuro–Kwajalein–Kosrae–Pohnpei–Chuuk–Guam) a few times per week in each direction, with additional connections via Guam and Pohnpei. Schedules are thin and subject to change, so confirm before booking.
Okat village is only a few minutes' drive from the airport. There is no airport bus or taxi rank; most visitors are collected by their hotel or lodge, which should be arranged in advance.
US citizens may stay up to a year visa-free under the Compact of Free Association; most other nationalities receive a 30-day entry permit on arrival. The currency is the US dollar.
By Car / Road
The circumferential road connects Okat to Tafunsak and the airport to the southeast, and continues around the coast toward Tofol, Lelu, Malem, and Utwe. Driving is on the right; traffic is very light.
Okat is small and spread out. A rental car or the transfer arranged by your accommodation is the most practical way to travel between the airport, the village, and other parts of the island. There is no taxi system and no ride-hailing apps. Hotels and resorts arrange transport for guests.
Crime is virtually unknown on Kosrae. Standard precautions against opportunistic theft from unattended bags or unlocked cars are sufficient.
What are the things to do?
Kosrae International Airport (KSA) — the island's only air gateway; the small terminal and surrounding airstrip are visible from the road.
Okat harbour and coastline — a quiet fishing area on the north coast with views of the Pacific and easy access to the island's reef.
Yela Ka Forest — a short drive to the southwest in neighbouring Tafunsak; one of the last intact groves of giant ka (Terminalia carolinensis) trees, visited via a community-managed boardwalk with a local guide.
Village churches — white Congregational churches anchor Okat's settlements; Sunday services feature Kosrae's famous four-part hymn singing.
Use Okat as an entry/exit base — most visitors pass through Okat en route to and from Kosrae; stop to stock up on snacks and water at village stores near the airport.
Snorkelling and diving from the northwest coast — the reefs off Okat and the neighbouring coast are healthy and accessible; arrange through your dive resort.
Birdwatching — the Yela freshwater swamp forest and surrounding coastline attract endemic and migratory species.
Sunday observance — the area quiets entirely for church; respectfully attending a service is memorable.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
There are few standalone restaurants in Okat; most visitors eat at their accommodation or self-cater from village stores. When available, local food centres on fish, reef shellfish, breadfruit, taro, tapioca, banana, coconut, and pork, sometimes cooked in an underground oven (um) for occasions.
Try breadfruit chips, fafa (pounded taro with coconut cream), and fresh-caught tuna or wahoo sashimi if offered.
Where to drink?
Okat is not a drinking destination. Kosrae's conservative Congregationalist culture means alcohol regulation is strict and varies by municipality; check the current local rules on arrival. Far more central to daily life are sakau (kava), fresh young coconut (ni), and sweet tangerine juice in season. Avoid tap water; drink bottled or filtered water, which your accommodation will provide.

Budget
- Village guesthouses near the airport — simple rooms convenient for early departures or arrivals.
Mid-range
- Kosrae Village Ecolodge & Dive Resort (Malem, a short drive southeast) — thatched eco-bungalows and a good restaurant; a comfortable base if Okat itself lacks dining options.
- Pacific Treelodge Resort (Lelu Harbor, roughly 25 minutes east) — overwater wooden bungalows above the mangroves, walking distance to the Lelu Ruins.
Upscale
- Kosrae Nautilus Resort (Tofol/Lelu area) — the island's most full-service option; AC rooms, pool, restaurant, dive shop, and bar.
What should you buy?
Shopping in Okat is limited to small village stores stocking imported groceries, tinned fish, rice, ramen, and basics. When available, buy woven pandanus baskets and fans, carved walking sticks, and local coconut oil or noni products directly from village women. Roadside tables sometimes sell tropical fruit (banana, breadfruit, taro, tangerines). Pay the asking price — bargaining is not customary. Bring USD in small bills; ATMs are scarce and mainly near Tofol.
Where to go next?
- Tafunsak (southeast) — the Yela Ka Forest boardwalk is a short drive away.
- Tofol & Lelu (roughly 25 minutes east) — the Lelu Stone City ruins, the state museum, and the island's services.
- Malem (~30 minutes southeast) — a coastal village with reef access and the Kosrae Village Ecolodge.
- Utwe (~45 minutes south) — the Utwe-Walung Marine Park mangroves and kayaking.
- Pohnpei (PNI) (~1 hour by air) — Nan Madol and Sokehs Rock.
