Tafunsak
Kosrae, Micronesia
Why visit Tafunsak?
Tafunsak is a municipality occupying the northern and northwestern part of Kosrae's main island, in the easternmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia. It is the most spread-out of Kosrae's villages and the one closest to Kosrae International Airport at Okat, so most visitors pass through or near Tafunsak on the way to and from the island. Its great natural draw is the Yela Ka Forest — one of the last intact stands of the giant Terminalia carolinensis (ka) tree in the world — protected by the community and visited via a boardwalk with a local guide. The coastline here is fringed by healthy reef and includes the deep-water entrance at Okat.
Like the rest of Kosrae, Tafunsak is deeply Congregationalist Christian, and Sunday is a near-total day of rest. Visitors are welcomed but expected to dress modestly away from the beach, keep quiet on Sundays, and ask before photographing people. There is no nightlife and effectively no crime.
The climate is tropical, hot, and wet year-round, around 27–31 °C (81–88 °F) with high humidity. The drier window runs roughly January to April; the latter half of the year is wetter, with rain possible any time.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
Tafunsak is the closest municipality to Kosrae International Airport (KSA) at Okat, served by United's "Island Hopper" route a few times a week, with connections via Guam and Pohnpei. Depending where in Tafunsak you are headed, the airport is only 5–15 minutes by road. There is no airport bus or taxi; arrange a pickup through your accommodation.
US citizens may stay visa-free up to a year under the Compact of Free Association; most other nationalities get a 30-day permit on arrival. The currency is the US dollar.
By Car / Road
The circumferential road runs from Tafunsak and Okat southeast to Lelu, Tofol, and Malem, and around toward Utwe; the far western stretch toward Walung is incomplete, and Walung is reached by boat. Driving is on the right; traffic is very light.
Tafunsak is large and spread out, so a rental car or your accommodation's transfer is the practical way to get around. There is no taxi system and no ride-hailing apps. Boats and guides for the Yela forest and the reef are arranged through the community or your hotel.
What are the things to do?
Yela Ka Forest — the standout sight: a rare, intact grove of towering ka (Terminalia carolinensis) trees in a freshwater swamp, protected by the local community and traversed by a raised boardwalk. Visited with a local guide who interprets the ecology and the conservation effort.
Okat harbour and reef — the northwest coast's deep-water entrance and surrounding reef; a launching point for diving and snorkelling.
Village churches — white Congregational churches anchor Tafunsak's settlements; Sunday services feature Kosrae's four-part hymn singing (attend quietly and modestly dressed).
Sleeping Lady ridgeline — the green interior peaks rise inland, part of the silhouette that names the island.
Walk the Yela Ka Forest boardwalk — the signature Tafunsak experience, combining a rare ecosystem with a community conservation story.
Scuba diving and snorkelling — the reefs off Okat and the northwest coast are healthy and clear; trips run from the island's dive resorts.
Guided rainforest and ridge hikes — to waterfalls, viewpoints, and the inland Menke ruins; go with a guide, as trails are muddy and unsigned.
Birdwatching — the Yela swamp forest and surrounding rainforest are good for endemic and migratory birds.
Sunday observance — the area quiets entirely for church; respectfully attending a service is memorable.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Food is centred on fish, reef shellfish, breadfruit, taro, tapioca, banana, coconut, and pork, often cooked in an underground oven (um) for occasions. Tafunsak has few standalone restaurants; most visitors eat at their accommodation or self-cater from village stores.
Try breadfruit chips, fafa (pounded taro with coconut cream), and fresh tuna or wahoo sashimi if offered.
Where to drink?
Tafunsak is not a drinking destination. Kosrae's conservative Congregationalist culture means alcohol regulation is strict and varies by municipality; check the current local rules on arrival. Central to local life are sakau (kava), fresh young coconut (ni), and sweet tangerine juice in season. Avoid tap water; drink bottled or filtered water, which accommodations provide.

Budget
- Village guesthouses / homestays near Okat and the airport — simple rooms, convenient for early flights.
Mid-range
- Kosrae Village Ecolodge & Dive Resort (Malem, a drive southeast) — thatched eco-bungalows and a good restaurant; a comfortable base if you want more amenities than Tafunsak offers.
Upscale
"Upscale" on Kosrae means comfortable, not luxurious.
- Kosrae Nautilus Resort (Tofol/Lelu area, a drive southeast) — the island's most full-service property; AC rooms, pool, restaurant, dive shop, and bar.
What should you buy?
There is little to buy in Tafunsak beyond village stores stocking imported basics. When available, look for woven pandanus baskets and fans, carved hardwood items, and roadside tropical fruit (banana, breadfruit, taro, tangerines). Pay the asked price — bargaining is not customary in Kosrae. Bring USD in small bills; ATMs are limited and concentrated near Tofol.
Where to go next?
- Lelu & Tofol (a short drive southeast) — the Lelu Stone City ruins, the state museum, and the island's services.
- Malem (~25 minutes southeast) — a coastal village with reef access and the Kosrae Village Ecolodge.
- Utwe (south) — the Utwe-Walung Marine Park mangroves and kayaking.
- Walung (west coast, boat access only) — a roadless traditional village with superb beaches.
- Menke (inland) — older stone-city ruins reached by a guided jungle hike.
- Pohnpei (PNI) (~1 hour by air) — Nan Madol and Sokehs Rock.
