Touil

Hodh el Gharbi, Mauritania

Why visit Touil?

Touil is a small, remote village in northern Hodh el Gharbi, deep in the Sahelian pastoral zone. It is one of the most isolated settlements in the region, surrounded by vast grazing lands and acacia bush. The population is predominantly Moorish (Arab-Berber), with traditional camel and goat herding as the main livelihood. Touil sees virtually no tourism and offers an experience of extreme rural isolation typical of the Mauritanian interior.
