Kobenni

Kobenni is a small market town in southwestern Hodh el Gharbi, near the border with Assaba region. It is a centre for the Fulani (Peul) pastoral community, surrounded by Sahelian grazing lands. The town has a quiet, traditional character with a mix of Moorish and Fulani inhabitants. Kobenni is off the main tourist routes but offers an authentic glimpse of rural Sahelian life.

The nearest airport is Kiffa (KFA), approximately 130 km southwest.

By Car / Road

Kobenni is connected by unpaved road to Aioun el Atrouss (80 km, 1.5–2 hours) and to Kiffa (130 km). The roads are passable in the dry season but can become difficult after rain. Bush taxis run from Aioun when roads permit.

Walking. The town is very small.

• Kobenni market — A small weekly livestock and produce market serving the Fulani community.

• Fulani villages — Traditional settlements with conical thatched-roof compounds visible on the outskirts.

• Fulani cultural visit — Engage with the pastoral community, learn about traditional livestock herding, and sample fresh dairy products.

Simple home-style meals (millet porridge, rice, grilled meat) can be found at small local eateries.

Fresh milk, soured milk, and sweet mint tea are the main beverages. Bottled water is available but limited.

No formal hotels. Homestay or camping are the only options.

Basics only — tea, sugar, millet, and cloth at the market.

• Kiffa (130 km southwest) — Capital of Assaba region, known for Kiffa jewellery.
