Hamrun

Hamrun, Malta

Why visit Hamrun?

Ħamrun is a densely populated, bustling town located just inland from the Grand Harbour area of Malta, adjacent to Valletta and Floriana. It developed rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a major commercial and residential hub. Unlike the quiet, rural villages of Malta, Ħamrun has a busy, urban character with a long high street lined with shops, cafes, and businesses. The town has a strong working-class identity and is famous for its passionate sports fans and intense band club rivalries.

What are the things to do?

The main architectural landmark is the Parish Church of St. Gaetan, a grand 19th-century church with a massive dome. Also worth visiting is the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Sanctuary, which houses the tomb of Saint George Preca, Malta's first canonized saint.

Attend the annual Feast of St. Gaetan in the first week of August. It is famous for being one of the loudest and most passionate feasts in Malta, characterized by rival brass bands and massive street crowds dressed in red or blue.
