Why visit?

Ħamrun is a bustling, densely populated local council located in the Inner Harbour Region of Malta, just a short distance from the capital city of Valletta. Originally developing as a working-class residential and commercial suburb during the 19th-century British colonial era, Ħamrun grew rapidly along the main transport route leading out of Valletta. Today, it is a vibrant urban center characterized by its busy high street, traditional terraced houses, and a multicultural community.

Unlike the quiet rural villages of Malta, Ħamrun is defined by its energetic urban pace. Its main thoroughfare, St. Joseph High Road, is lined with shops, cafes, and businesses, making it a major commercial hub. The town's architecture is a mix of Victorian-era British colonial buildings, traditional Maltese townhouses with colorful wooden balconies, and mid-century developments.

When is the best time to visit?

Ħamrun is a year-round urban destination. However, the town truly comes alive in August during its famous parish feast, which is one of the most passionate and energetic on the island. The autumn is also an excellent time to visit, particularly in October, when the town hosts its popular annual chocolate festival.

What should you eat?

Ħamrun offers a wide variety of dining options, ranging from traditional Maltese snacks to international cuisines. The town is famous for its traditional pastizzerias and bakeries, serving pastizzi, qassatat, and fresh Maltese bread. In recent years, Ħamrun has welcomed a diverse range of international eateries, reflecting its multicultural population. It is also home to traditional band clubs where visitors can enjoy affordable Maltese food and drinks in a social atmosphere.

What is the culture like?

Ħamrun is famous for having one of the most passionate and competitive festival cultures in Malta. The Feast of Saint Cajetan, celebrated on the first Sunday after August 7, is legendary for the fierce but friendly rivalry between the town's two main band clubs: the "Red" St. Gaetan Band Club and the "Blue" St. Joseph Band Club. The Sunday morning march is one of the largest and most chaotic in Malta, with thousands of supporters singing and dancing in the streets. Ħamrun also hosts the annual Hamrun Chocolate Festival in October, celebrating the town's historic connection to cocoa production during the rule of the Knights.
