Niafunke
Tombouctou, Mali
Why visit Niafunke?
Niafunké is a small town on the Niger River in central Mali, the administrative seat (chef-lieu) of the commune of Soboundou within Niafunké Cercle, Tombouctou Region. It is best known internationally as the hometown of the musician Ali Farka Touré, who moved there as an infant, later served as the town's mayor from 2004, and invested much of his music income in a local irrigation scheme. His 1999 album Niafunké, recorded in the town, is named for it, and his son Vieux Farka Touré was also born there.
