Lere

Tombouctou, Mali

Why visit Lere?

Léré is a small town and rural commune of the Niafunké Cercle in the Tombouctou Region of Mali, covering about 1,342 km² with the town plus 18 surrounding villages. The 2009 census recorded a commune population of just over 16,000. A weekly market is held in the town on Fridays and draws people from nearby settlements. The commune lies near the Faguibine lake system, a network of five interconnected lakes fed by the Niger River that has largely dried up in recent decades due to the Sahel droughts of the 1970s–80s, with major impacts on local fishing and grazing livelihoods.
