Youwarou

Mopti, Mali

Why visit Youwarou?

Youwarou is a village and the seat of Youwarou Cercle in Mopti Region, at the heart of the Inner Niger Delta (also called Macina), a vast wetland system of seasonal floodplains and lakes fed by the Niger River. It sits near Lake Débo, the Delta's largest lake, whose water level peaks each year around November–December as floodwaters from further upstream finally arrive — the annual flood takes about a month to travel from Mopti downstream to Lake Débo. Fishing is central to the local economy: the Inner Niger Delta accounts for the large majority of Mali's fish catch, and Youwarou is a significant source of the fish sold in Mopti's markets.

This region is affected by the ongoing conflict in central Mali. Check official government travel advisories before any travel here — this guide describes the place for reference only, not as a current destination.
