Douentza

Mopti, Mali

Why visit Douentza?

Douentza is a town in Mopti Region, historically the leading town of Haayre, a Fulɓe-led kingdom dating to the 19th century, in an area that was also part of the Wagadou (Ghana) Empire's iron-working heartland centuries earlier. The town sits at a crossroads position in the Sahel, historically serving as a gateway between the Niger bend and Dogon Country to the south.

Douentza has been at the center of Mali's ongoing conflict for over a decade and is not currently safe to visit. It was captured by Tuareg rebels in 2012 and then by an Islamist armed group later that year during the broader northern Mali crisis. Violence has continued since, including a surge of attacks on civilians in Douentza Cercle in January 2023 that killed dozens of people, alongside forced recruitment and cattle-raiding-driven ethnic reprisals. Check official government travel advisories before any travel here — this guide describes the place for reference only, not as a current destination.
