Bahau

Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

Why visit Bahau?

Bahau is the principal town of Jempol District in northeastern Negeri Sembilan, roughly 150 km north of Kuala Lumpur. Federal routes FT10 and FT13 intersect in the town, linking it north to Bandar Seri Jempol and Temerloh (Pahang) and south to Gemas. The town's name is said to derive from a Cantonese phrase meaning "horse's mouth," paired with the nearby settlement of Mahsan ("horse's body"). Bahau grew slowly until Chinese settlers arrived inland in search of tin ore, and it has a notable World War II history as an agricultural settlement established for Eurasian and Chinese Catholics under Japanese occupation. Today it is a multi-ethnic town with Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities, set amid surrounding palm oil and rubber estates.
