Kuala Pilah

Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

Why visit Kuala Pilah?

Kuala Pilah is a town in central Negeri Sembilan, about 40 km east of Seremban, and seat of Kuala Pilah District, which contains Seri Menanti, the royal capital and seat of the Negeri Sembilan royal family. Negeri Sembilan itself takes its name from nine nagari (villages) settled by Minangkabau migrants from Sumatra beginning around the 16th century, who brought a matrilineal social system and distinctive architecture. Kuala Pilah is one of only four districts — alongside Tampin, Rembau, and Jelebu — where Minangkabau adat custom and tradition are still actively practiced, and traditional "rumah Minangkabau" houses with their bull-horn-shaped roofs can still be seen in surrounding villages.
