Why visit Gurun?

Gurun is a small town in the Kuala Muda district of Kedah, about 20 km north of Sungai Petani along the North-South Expressway. It is primarily known as a highway rest stop and for its proximity to Gunung Jerai, the highest point in Kedah. The town serves the surrounding agricultural and light industrial areas. The Gurun exit is a busy interchange where travellers stop for fuel and food.

By Plane

The nearest airports are Sultan Abdul Halim Airport (AOR IATA) in Alor Setar (40 km north) and Penang International Airport (PEN IATA) (90 km south).

By Train

The nearest railway station is at Sungai Petani (20 km south).

By Car / Road

Gurun is on the North-South Expressway (E1), with its own interchange. From Alor Setar, about 30 minutes south; from Penang, about 1 hour north. Express buses stop at the Gurun layby.

The town is very small and walkable. You need a car for Gunung Jerai.
