Overview

Central Region is the heart of Malawi, encompassing the capital city of Lilongwe and a vast agricultural hinterland. The region stretches from the Zambian border in the west to Lake Malawi in the east, with landscapes ranging from rolling plains to the Dedza Plateau. It is the political and administrative centre of the country.

Key destinations include Lilongwe, the purpose-built capital; Kasungu National Park, a wildlife reserve in the northwest; Nkhotakota, a historic lake town; and the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. The region is also home to the Dedza Pottery and the historic Mua Mission.

When to Visit

The dry winter months from May to October are ideal for wildlife viewing in Kasungu and Nkhotakota. The rains run from November to April.

Getting Around

The M1 highway runs through the region, connecting Lilongwe to the north and south. Roads to the lake are paved. The railway runs from Mchinji through Lilongwe to Salima.

Cuisine

Nsima (maize porridge) is the staple, served with ndiwo (relish) of fish, meat, beans, or vegetables. Lilongwe has the widest range of restaurants.

The Chewa people are dominant. The Kulamba ceremony, held annually, is a major cultural event. Lilongwe's Old Town is vibrant with markets and music.
