Dalheim

Dalheim is a village in the canton of Remich, in southeastern Luxembourg, known chiefly for the "Dalheim Ricciacum" Gallo-Roman archaeological site on its edge. Founded under Emperor Augustus, the Ricciacum vicus sat at a strategic point on the Via Agrippa, the Roman road linking the Mediterranean to the Rhine, and grew by the 3rd century AD into a settlement of roughly 25 hectares with a hostel, temples, and baths. Its best-preserved feature is a 2nd-century Gallo-Roman theatre, rediscovered in 1985, which could seat around 3,500 people and is noted for surviving "honor seats" with backrests and armrests — a feature otherwise unknown in Roman Gaul. The site was first excavated around 1850 and more systematically from the 1980s by Luxembourg's National Museum of History and Art; it is now managed by the Centre des Monuments du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg with Luxembourg's National Institute for Archaeological Research.
