Remich is a canton in southeastern Luxembourg, draped along the left bank of the Moselle river which forms the natural border with Germany. Named after its principal town, the canton is defined by the Moselle's broad, vineyard-draped valley, its mild microclimate, and a long tradition of winemaking that gives this corner of Luxembourg a distinctly Mediterranean flavour compared to the forested north.
For the traveller, the Remich canton packs an outsized amount of interest into a compact area. Remich itself is a lively riverside resort with an elegant esplanade and pavement cafés. Schengen shot to worldwide fame when the landmark European free-movement agreement was signed there in 1985. Mondorf-les-Bains offers Luxembourg's only casino and a renowned thermal spa complex. Threading through it all are the Moselle vineyards — the source of Luxembourg's celebrated crémant, Riesling, and Pinot wines.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring through early autumn (May–October) is the prime window. The Moselle valley enjoys a relatively mild, sheltered microclimate — warmer and sunnier than much of the rest of Luxembourg. The vineyards are at their most beautiful from May's green flush through the golden harvest of September and October.
The wine season drives much of the event calendar, with open wine cellar days and wine festivals clustering in late summer and early autumn. Fuesend Karneval (February/March) brings carnival celebrations to Remich. Winter is quieter, though the thermal baths at Mondorf-les-Bains operate year-round.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
The canton is compact and well connected by road. The N2 links Remich to Luxembourg City in roughly 30 minutes, while the N10 runs south toward Schengen and north toward Grevenmacher. Free nationwide public transport serves the canton well via bus lines.
Cycling is arguably the best way to explore. The Moselle river cycle path runs the length of the valley, and Rentabike Miselerland offers bike rental at multiple locations, making one-way vineyard rides easy.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
The Moselle valley shapes Remich's cuisine. Freshwater fish — particularly trout and pike-perch — feature prominently alongside national staples. The canton's greatest culinary distinction is its wine and crémant culture — Luxembourg's Moselle wines and Crémant de Luxembourg are produced in quantity here.
Restaurants range from riverside brasseries in Remich to upscale options around Mondorf-les-Bains. Caves St. Martin near Stadtbredimus, with 1 km of underground cellars dating from 1921, offers cellar tours.
What is the culture like?
Fuesend Karneval (February or March) is the canton's most distinctive festival — a three-day carnival celebration in Remich featuring a parade, the burning of the Stréimännchen effigy on the Moselle bridge, and the closing Buergbrennen bonfire.
The Musée A Possen in Bech-Kleinmacher preserves the material culture of the Moselle valley. Wine-related events punctuate the calendar from late summer through autumn, including open-cellar days, harvest festivals, and wine-tasting evenings.
