Why visit?

Redange (Luxembourgish: Réiden) is a canton in western Luxembourg, stretching along the Belgian border in a landscape of gentle rolling farmland, wooded ridges, and the quiet valley of the Attert river. It is one of the Grand Duchy's most rural cantons — a patchwork of cereal fields, hedgerows, and small stone villages that feels a world away from the bustle of Luxembourg City barely an hour to the southeast.

For the traveller, Redange offers an unhurried, deeply agricultural experience. There are no blockbuster monuments here; instead the canton rewards those who come to cycle the river valleys, walk field-and-forest trails between villages, explore a medieval castle ruin, and discover how a small rural region has embraced sustainability and local produce. Beckerich in particular has become a showcase for community renewable energy.

History surfaces in unexpected places. Roman settlement left its mark — the village of Vichten yielded one of the finest Roman mosaics ever found north of the Alps — while Useldange's atmospheric castle ruin speaks to medieval heritage.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is the best window. The Attert valley and surrounding farmland are at their lushest in May and June, with long daylight hours ideal for cycling and walking. July and August bring warm but rarely oppressive temperatures — daytime highs typically in the low-to-mid 20s °C.

Autumn is equally rewarding: harvest activity fills the fields, wooded ridges take on warm colour, and September and October offer crisp, clear days. Winters are cool, grey, and damp, with noticeably limited services and dining options.

How do you get around?

Redange is compact and best explored by car, which gives the freedom to link its dispersed villages. Distances between main settlements are typically 10–20 km. Public transport is provided by Luxembourg's nationwide RGTR bus network, which is completely free. However, rural frequencies are modest and services thin out considerably on evenings and weekends.

The canton has no passenger railway. The disused Attert valley rail line has been converted into a long-distance cycle path (PC 12), making cycling one of the most enjoyable ways to move between villages along the river.

Where should you go?

  • Redange — the cantonal seat and market town on the Attert, serving as the hub for western Luxembourg's rural heartland.
  • Beckerich — a sustainability showcase known for community solar, biogas projects, a restored watermill, and short-supply-chain food economy.
  • Ell — a quiet agricultural commune set among the open farmland of the canton's central plateau.
  • Grosbous — a small village nestled in wooded countryside with forest walking trails.
  • Preizerdaul — a rural commune straddling the Attert valley with riverside scenery.
  • Rambrouch — a sprawling commune of scattered hamlets on the edge of the Éislek.
  • Saeul — a tiny village surrounded by open Gutland fields.
  • Useldange — home to an atmospheric medieval castle ruin above the Attert.
  • Vichten — famous for a large, exceptionally well-preserved Roman floor mosaic depicting the Muses.

What should you eat?

Redange's table is firmly that of rural Luxembourg, built on pork, smoked meats, and hearty country cooking. Look for Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork collar with broad beans), Bouneschlupp (green bean soup), Träipen (black pudding), and local sausages served with fried potatoes.

As an agricultural canton, Redange takes pride in local and artisanal produce — farm dairy, cured meats, and fresh bread. Roadside farm shops, village bakeries, and seasonal producers' markets are the most authentic places to buy and taste. Dining out tends toward village inns serving traditional plates.

What is the culture like?

Cultural life revolves around villages — church feast days (Kiermes), agricultural fairs, music society concerts, and small community festivals in warmer months. The canton's strong cooperative and environmental movement centred on Beckerich generates open days and sustainability fairs.

National traditions are observed warmly: Buergbrennen (bonfires on the first Sunday of Lent) and National Day on 23 June bring eve-of celebrations and fireworks.
