Heffingen

Mersch, Luxembourg

Why visit Heffingen?

Heffingen (Hiefenech in Luxembourgish) is a commune in the canton of Mersch, in central Luxembourg, also encompassing the village of Reuland, near the White Ernz river valley close to Larochette. Heffingen has genuine archaeological significance: in 1935, a local resident discovered a nearly complete Mesolithic human skeleton at the Loschbour rock shelter here — the "Loschbourmann," radiocarbon-dated to roughly 6,220–5,990 BC and one of the oldest known human remains found in Luxembourg. A 2014 genome sequencing of the skeleton made it a key reference sample for Western European hunter-gatherer ancestry.
