Larochette
Mersch, Luxembourg
Why visit Larochette?
Larochette (Luxembourgish: Fiels, German: Fels) is an ancient market settlement in the canton of Mersch in central Luxembourg, situated in the wooded valley of the White Ernz (Wäiss Iernz) river. The village is dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle standing atop a sandstone cliff 150 meters above the valley floor.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Larochette developed into a thriving textile hub powered by mills along the river. The central marketplace, Place Bleech, originally served as a communal meadow where weavers spread linen and wool fabrics to bleach under the sun. Today, the settlement serves as a gateway to the Mullerthal region (commonly called Luxembourg's Little Switzerland), attracting hikers, cyclists, and castle enthusiasts.
The climate is temperate oceanic. Summer temperatures average 18–24°C with long daylight hours, while winters are cold and damp, with averages ranging between 1°C and 6°C. Rain falls fairly evenly throughout the year, with an annual average of around 800 mm.
