Grevenmacher, Luxembourg

Why visit Betzdorf?

Betzdorf is a commune in the canton of Grevenmacher, in eastern Luxembourg, along the river Syre, comprising the localities of Betzdorf, Berg, Mensdorf, Olingen, and Roodt-sur-Syre. Its best-known landmark is Betzdorf Castle, built 1911–1919 for engineer René Müller Laval to a design by German architect Paul Schultze-Naumberg. The castle later became the residence of Hereditary Grand Duke Jean and Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium from their 1953 marriage until 1964 — all their children, including the future Grand Duke Henri (born there in 1955), were born at Betzdorf. After serving as a nursing home and briefly as a Scout base camp, the castle was bought in 1986 by SES, which made it the headquarters of what is now the world's largest satellite operator by revenue, alongside its satellite control facility operational since 1987.
