Why visit?

Grevenmacher (Luxembourgish: Gréiwemaacher) is a canton in eastern Luxembourg, stretching along the winding Moselle river which forms the natural border with Germany. With roughly 4,900 residents in its main town, it is the largest Luxembourgish settlement on the Moselle and the administrative centre of the surrounding canton. The region is defined by its gentle river valley landscape, terraced vineyards, and a long tradition of winemaking.

The canton encompasses a mix of riverside towns, forested plateaus, and rural communes. The Moselle valley floor is given over to viticulture — Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Elbling grapes thrive on the sun-facing slopes. Grevenmacher itself is a charming small town with a pedestrianised old centre, a butterfly garden, and a riverside promenade.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring through early autumn (May to October) is ideal. The Moselle valley enjoys a mild microclimate, with summer temperatures often reaching 22–27°C — warmer than the rest of Luxembourg. Grape harvest season (September–October) brings wine festivals, open cellar days, and a festive atmosphere along the Route du Vin.

Winter is quiet and cold (2–6°C), with some riverside restaurants and attractions closed or operating reduced hours. The Moselle valley's relatively low elevation means snow is less common here than on the Ardennes plateau.

How do you get around?

The A1/E44 motorway runs through the canton, with exits serving Grevenmacher directly. Luxembourg City is approximately 30 minutes west by car, and Trier (Germany) is about 40 minutes northeast. Grevenmacher itself has no railway station — the nearest rail connections are across the Moselle in Germany.

Free Luxembourg-side buses connect to Diekirch, Echternach, Luxembourg City, and Remich. Within the canton, buses link the main communes, though a car is most practical for exploring. Cycling along the Moselle river path is a popular alternative with flat, well-maintained routes.

What should you eat?

The Moselle valley's cuisine is shaped by its viticulture. Fish from the Moselle — particularly trout and pike-perch — feature prominently, often prepared in Riesling sauce. Game, freshwater crayfish, and hearty stews round out traditional menus.

Grevenmacher's dining scene centres on the Route du Vin. Wine taverns and Weinstuben offer tastings of local vintages paired with cheese and charcuterie. The annual grape harvest festivals in September and October bring street food and open-air dining.

What is the culture like?

Wine is the cultural backbone of the Grevenmacher canton. The Route du Vin runs through the valley, connecting wine-producing villages. During harvest season, the Fête des Vendanges brings open-air tastings, music, and processions to riverside towns.

The Jardin des Papillons (Butterfly Garden) in Grevenmacher houses hundreds of tropical and European butterfly species in a lush greenhouse setting. The canton's medieval churches are notable for their Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
