Why visit Malbun?

Malbun is the premier year-round alpine resort of the Principality of Liechtenstein, nestled in a sheltered mountain bowl at an altitude of 1,600 meters (5,250 feet). Located in the southeastern corner of the Triesenberg municipality, it is surrounded by high peaks, including the Augstenberg and the Sareiserjoch. Historically a summer alpine pasture for dairy farming, Malbun evolved in the mid-20th century into a highly regarded, family-friendly ski and hiking resort.

The resort is known for its compact layout, car-free village center vibes, and uncrowded slopes. The climate is subalpine, offering excellent, reliable snow cover from December through April and pleasant, cool mountain breezes during the summer months. It is particularly famous for having received the Swiss Tourism Federation's "Family Destination" award, highlighting its kid-friendly facilities and safe environment.

From Zurich Airport, travelers can take a Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) train to Sargans or Buchs SG, then board a LIEmobil bus to Vaduz, and finally transfer to bus route 21 which goes directly to Malbun. Direct taxi rides from Zurich Airport take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, costing around CHF 330 to CHF 400.

By Train

Malbun has no rail service. The nearest railway stations are Sargans and Buchs SG in Switzerland, and Feldkirch in Austria. From Sargans, take the LIEmobil bus route 11 to Vaduz Post, then transfer to bus route 21, which terminates directly in Malbun. The entire bus trip takes about 50 minutes. Swiss SBB or Austrian ÖBB train tickets can be booked online.

By Car / Road

From Vaduz, follow the main road climbing steeply up to Triesenberg. Continue past Triesenberg on the main road toward Steg, passing through the 740-meter-long Gnalp-Steg tunnel. Once through the tunnel, follow the signs for another 5 km up the alpine road directly into Malbun. Driving time from Vaduz is approximately 25 minutes. Winter tires are mandatory from November to April, and snow chains are highly recommended during heavy snowfalls.

LIEmobil bus route 21 runs hourly (and half-hourly during peak seasons) from Vaduz through Triesenberg and Steg, ending at the main bus terminal in the center of Malbun.

Malbun is extremely compact and is virtually car-free. The village center can be easily traversed on foot, with most hotels, ski lifts, and restaurants situated within a 5- to 10-minute walk.

To travel outside the valley to Steg, Triesenberg, or Vaduz, use the LIEmobil bus route 21. For skiers and hikers, three main chairlifts (Sareis, Täli, and Hochegg) provide direct access to the surrounding peaks and trails.
