Greenville

Sinoe, Liberia

Why visit Greenville?

Greenville is the capital of Sinoe County, a port city on a lagoon near the mouth of the Sinoe River in southeastern Liberia, about 240 km (150 miles) southeast of Monrovia. It was founded around 1838 by the Mississippi Colonization Society as part of the "Mississippi-in-Africa" settlement, named for James Green, a Mississippi judge who supported the resettlement of formerly enslaved people to Liberia. The 2008 census recorded a population of roughly 16,400. Greenville's harbor is Liberia's third-largest port, with two berthing quays, and the town's economy centers on the logging trade after being heavily damaged during the civil war and rebuilt around port operations. Greenville is also the usual gateway for road access to Sapo National Park, Liberia's largest protected area and only national park.
