Sinoe

Sinoe County is a coastal county in southeastern Liberia, established in 1843 as part of the Mississippi-in-Africa settlement under the American Colonization Society, predating Liberia's 1847 independence. The capital, Greenville, is a port city at the mouth of the Sinoe River. The county is home to Sapo National Park — Liberia's first and largest national park, and the second-largest block of primary tropical rainforest in West Africa after Taï National Park in neighboring Côte d'Ivoire. Sinoe also has miles of largely undeveloped Atlantic coastline.

The dry season (November–April) is best. The rainy season is very wet.

Roads connecting Greenville and Sinoe's interior districts to the rest of Liberia are largely unpaved and become difficult in the rainy season; a 4x4 is recommended for interior travel. Boat services also run along the coast between Greenville and other ports such as Monrovia and Harper.

Sinoe County's population is ethnically diverse: the Kru, concentrated along the coast and historically known for maritime work, are the largest group, alongside Grebo, Bassa, Kpelle, and the inland Sapo people. The Sapo, for whom the national park is named, historically practiced forest agriculture and maintain distinct chieftaincy and masquerade traditions; local Sapo custom holds a taboo against hunting chimpanzees.
