Nimba County is a large inland county in northeastern Liberia, bordering Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire. The capital Sanniquellie is a historic town where the 1959 Sanniquellie Declaration was signed, laying the foundation for the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union). The county is named after Mount Nimba, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the border with Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire, though the Liberian portion is not part of the strict reserve. Nimba was a major iron-ore mining region, and the town of Ganta is one of the largest commercial centres in the Liberian interior. The county is also home to the East Nimba Nature Reserve.
When is the best time to visit?
