Monrovia
Montserrado, Liberia
Why visit Monrovia?
Monrovia is the capital and largest city of Liberia, with a population of over 1.5 million. It sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the Mesurado River, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for freed African-American slaves, and named after US President James Monroe. Monrovia has a unique heritage blending Americo-Liberian and indigenous African cultures. The city centre features a mix of colonial-era buildings, modern construction, and post-war reconstruction. Monrovia is a lively, chaotic, and resilient city, with busy markets, food stalls, and a vibrant street life. The city was heavily damaged during the civil wars (1989–2003) but is steadily rebuilding.
