Mokhotlong District is located in northeastern Lesotho, one of the most remote and highest-altitude districts in the country. The district capital, Mokhotlong, is a high-altitude town (over 2,200 m) in a valley surrounded by the Maloti Mountains. The district is known for its stunning mountain scenery, crystal-clear rivers, and traditional Basotho highland culture.

The area is popular for hiking, pony trekking, and fishing. Mokhotlong is a gateway to the remote eastern highlands and the source of the Orange (Senqu) River.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is from November to March when the weather is milder. Winter (May to September) is very cold with snow on the mountains.

How do you get around?

The A1 highway connects Mokhotlong to Butha-Buthe and Maseru via the mountains. The road is paved but winding. Minibus taxis operate from the district capital.
