Why visit Dundaga?
Dundaga is a rural settlement in Talsi Municipality, situated in the northern interior of the Kurzeme peninsula in western Latvia. The village developed around Dundaga Castle, a stone fortress constructed in the late 13th century by the Archbishopric of Riga and later managed by the Baltic German noble family von der Osten-Sacken. Today, Dundaga functions as the primary transit point for travelers heading north toward Slītere National Park and the Baltic shoreline at Cape Kolka.
The settlement is recognized internationally as the birthplace of Arvīds Blūmentāls (1925–2006), a crocodile hunter and bushman whose exploits in the Australian Outback inspired the character of Crocodile Dundee. A two-tonne stone crocodile monument in the village park and a dedicated exhibition room in the castle document his expeditions.
Dundaga has a humid continental climate influenced by air currents from the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. Summers (June to August) are mild, with average daytime highs ranging from 18°C to 22°C (64°F–72°F). Winters (December to February) are cold and overcast, with daytime temperatures averaging −4°C to 0°C (25°F–32°F) and consistent snow cover. Rainfall averages 650 mm annually, with the highest precipitation occurring in July and August.
