Gjilan District occupies the eastern edge of Kosovo, stretching from the Kopaonik mountain foothills in the north to the North Macedonian border in the south. The district capital, Gjilan (Albanian: Gjilan; Serbian: Gnjilane), is Kosovo's fifth-largest city with roughly 55,000 inhabitants. The landscape is characterised by rolling agricultural lowlands interspersed with forested hills, with the South Morava river valley defining the district's eastern boundary.
The district is less touristed than western Kosovo but rewards visitors with an authentic, unhurried pace of life. The city of Gjilan has a small but pleasant centre with Ottoman-era remnants, while the surrounding countryside contains medieval monasteries, traditional villages, and the Goljak Monasteries complex — a cluster of Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries dating to the 14th and 15th centuries. Vitina, the district's second town, is known for its agricultural market and traditional character.
Gjilan District has a continental climate: hot summers (30–35 °C), cold winters (–5 to 5 °C). The best time to visit is spring through autumn, when the countryside is green and outdoor sites are accessible. The district's position on the Pristina–Skopje corridor makes it easy to combine with a visit to North Macedonia.
When is the best time to visit?
May through September offers the most pleasant conditions, with warm temperatures and green landscapes. July and August bring the hottest weather in the lowlands. The Gjilan Summer Festival typically takes place in July, featuring music and cultural events. The Vitina Agricultural Fair (typically September) showcases local produce and traditional farming. Winter (December–March) brings cold and occasional snow, limiting outdoor activities but offering a quiet, atmospheric experience of rural Kosovo.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Gjilan sits on the main highway between Pristina (60 km west, about 1 hour) and the North Macedonian border at Tabanovce (30 km east, about 30 minutes). Bus services connect Gjilan to Pristina (every 30–60 minutes, €3–4), Skopje (several daily, €4–5), and surrounding towns. The district has no railway — the nearest station is at Pristina.
Within the district, local minibuses connect Gjilan to Vitina (20 km, 25 minutes), Kamenica (30 km, 35 minutes), and surrounding villages. A car is useful for exploring the Goljak Monasteries and rural areas. The main roads are paved and in reasonable condition.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Gjilan's food scene reflects the agricultural character of the district. Traditional Albanian dishes dominate: flija (layered pancake), tavë kosi (lamb baked in yoghurt), and grilled meats. The central market in Gjilan sells fresh produce, local cheeses, and cured meats. Vitina is known for its agricultural fair and local food products. Te Sylejmani and Bubanj XXL in Gjilan are popular restaurants serving traditional and modern Albanian dishes (mains €4–8). Pizza and fast-food options are available in Gjilan and Kamenica. Vegetarian options are limited; specify pa mish (without meat). Halal is the norm.
What is the culture like?
The Gjilan Summer Festival brings music, theatre, and street food to the city centre in July. The Vitina Agricultural Fair (September) is a local institution, showcasing agricultural produce, traditional crafts, and livestock. The Goljak Monasteries complex hosts occasional cultural events and is a significant site for Serbian Orthodox heritage in Kosovo. Traditional Albanian aheng music is performed at weddings and celebrations throughout the district. The Gjilan Ethnographic Museum preserves local traditional costumes and artefacts.
