Toni Lekaj Cultural House (Rracaj)
Gjakova District, Kosovo
Why visit Toni Lekaj Cultural House (Rracaj)?
The Toni Lekaj Cultural House is a traditional Kosovo Albanian village house-museum in Rracaj, a small village in Gjakova District, western Kosovo. The house preserves the domestic life, crafts, and customs of rural Kosovo Albanians from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Toni Lekaj, a local cultural figure, converted his family home into a museum to prevent traditional knowledge and artefacts from being lost as rural communities modernise.
The cultural house is a typical stone-and-timber Albanian village house with multiple rooms arranged around a central courtyard. Exhibits include traditional clothing, agricultural tools, household items, musical instruments, and textiles. The collection also includes examples of traditional Albanian woodcarving, metalwork, and weaving. Guided tours are led by local guides who explain the significance of each room and artefact.
The village of Rracaj itself is a quiet, traditional settlement surrounded by farmland and hills, offering a glimpse of rural life far removed from Kosovo's cities. The cultural house is open by appointment or during cultural events; visitors should arrange visits in advance through the Gjakova tourist office or by contacting the cultural house directly.
