Hani i Elezit

Gjakova District, Kosovo

Why visit Hani i Elezit?

Hani i Elezit (also known as Elez Han) is a small border town of roughly 2,000 inhabitants in Gjakova District, near the Kosovo–North Macedonia frontier. The town sits at the base of the Sharr Mountains, at the point where the highway from Pristina crosses into North Macedonia. Its position as a border crossing gives it a transient character — many visitors pass through but few stop.

The town's name means "Han of Elez," referring to a historic roadside inn (han) that served travellers on the Pristina–Skopje route. Today, Hani i Elezit is primarily known as the Kosovo-side checkpoint for cross-border travel to North Macedonia. The surrounding landscape is mountainous, with the Sharr Mountains rising steeply to the south and east.

The town has a continental climate with hot summers (30–35 °C) and cold winters with occasional snow. The best time to visit is spring through autumn, when the mountain scenery is at its most dramatic and hiking trails are accessible. The Sharr Mountains immediately south of town offer excellent hiking opportunities.
