Eldoret

Uasin Gishu, Kenya

Why visit Eldoret?

Eldoret serves as the administrative capital of Uasin Gishu County in western Kenya. Situated on the Uasin Gishu Plateau at an elevation of 2,100 metres (6,900 feet) above sea level, the town lies between the Nandi Hills to the west and the Kerio Valley to the east. It acts as the primary trading and agro-processing center for the surrounding breadbasket region, which yields large harvests of maize, wheat, and dairy products. The name derives from the Maasai word eldore, meaning "stony river," which describes the rocky bed of the Sosiani River running through town.

Globally celebrated as the "City of Champions," Eldoret and its nearby highland settlements of Iten and Kaptagat form the training base for Kenya's world-record marathoners and middle-distance runners, including Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei. Travelers visit Eldoret to observe elite athletes training at high altitude, explore the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and use the city as a staging point for western Kenya circuit tours. The town also functions as a major higher education and healthcare center, housing Moi University and the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Eldoret has a subtropical highland climate with warm days and cold nights. Daytime high temperatures stay between 22°C and 26°C (72°F–79°F) throughout the year, while evening temperatures drop to 9°C to 13°C (48°F–55°F). The region experiences two rainy periods: the main rainy season from April to June and lighter rains from September to November.
