Rabai

Kilifi, Kenya

Why visit Rabai?

Rabai is a rural market town in Kilifi County, located 25 km northwest of Mombasa in coastal Kenya. The town stands as a landmark in East African history: in 1846, German missionaries Johann Ludwig Krapf and Johannes Rebmann founded Kenya's first Christian mission station and primary school here at Rabai Mpya. Today, the town remains an administrative center for the Rabai sub-county, surrounded by coconut palm groves and small-scale farms.

The local population belongs largely to the Rabai subgroup, one of the nine Mijikenda ethnic groups. The surrounding landscape features low-rolling coastal hills and dense pockets of indigenous rainforest, including the Sacred Kaya Rabai forest protected under UNESCO world heritage status. Travelers visit Rabai primarily to inspect 19th-century missionary landmarks at the Rabai Museum and experience traditional Mijikenda village life outside the coastal resort towns.

Rabai experiences a hot, tropical climate moderated by Indian Ocean breezes. Daily temperatures average 23°C to 32°C (73°F to 90°F) throughout the year. Relative humidity is consistently high, ranging between 70% and 85%.
