Mambrui
Kilifi, Kenya
Why visit Mambrui?
Mambrui is a coastal settlement in Kilifi County, located 15 km north of Malindi along the Indian Ocean shoreline. Known locally for its golden sand dunes that meet the ocean, the village sits immediately north of the Sabaki River Estuary. Historically, Mambrui served as an active Swahili trading port dating back to the 9th century. Archaeological excavations have uncovered 15th-century Ming Dynasty coins and porcelain fragments, documenting centuries of maritime trade between East Africa and Asia.
Travelers come to Mambrui for quiet beaches, kitesurfing, sandboarding, and historic Swahili architecture. Unlike Malindi or Watamu, the village maintains a slow pace driven by fishing, small-scale farming, and eco-tourism around its northern beaches.
The local climate is tropical and warm throughout the year. Daytime temperatures consistently range between 27°C and 32°C. Ocean breezes temper the heat along the beach, while humidity stays high across all seasons.
