Why visit Shalkar?
Shalkar is a small town of approximately 30,000 people located on the shores of Lake Shalkar in the southern part of Aqtöbe Region, western Kazakhstan. The town is known for its proximity to the lake, one of the largest saltwater lakes in the region, which provides fishing opportunities and a scenic backdrop to the otherwise flat steppe landscape. Shalkar has a quiet, traditional character, with a population that is predominantly Kazakh and a lifestyle centered on agriculture, fishing, and pastoral activities.
The town's location in the southern steppe gives it a harsh but beautiful environment, with wide horizons, golden grasslands, and the shimmering expanse of Lake Shalkar dominating the view. The surrounding area is sparsely populated, with small agricultural settlements and traditional Kazakh auls (villages) scattered across the steppe. Shalkar serves as a local market center and a base for fishing trips on the lake, which is known for its pike, carp, and other freshwater species.
Shalkar experiences an extreme continental climate with hot summers (30–38°C) and cold winters (-20°C to -30°C). The best time to visit is from June through September, when the lake is warm enough for fishing and the steppe is at its most accessible. The town center is compact, with a central bazaar, mosque, and a few government buildings arranged along the main street, with the lake visible from many points.
