Why visit Alga?
Alga is a small town of approximately 20,000 people located on the Ilek River in the Aqtöbe Region of western Kazakhstan, about 50 kilometers northeast of Aktobe. The town has a quiet, rural character, with tree-lined streets, a central bazaar, and a mix of Soviet-era and newer buildings. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling grasslands, occasional rocky outcrops, and small agricultural settlements. Alga's population is predominantly Kazakh, and traditional customs including horse breeding, felt-making, and dombra music are still practiced in the surrounding villages.
Alga experiences the same extreme continental climate as the rest of Aqtöbe Region, with hot summers (30–35°C) and cold winters (-20°C to -25°C). The best time to visit is from May through September, when the steppe is green and the river area is pleasant for walking. The town center is compact and walkable, with the central bazaar, mosque, and a few government buildings concentrated along the main street.
