Goto

Nagasaki, Japan

Why visit Goto?

Goto (五島) is a city spread across the Goto Islands, an archipelago far off the western coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in the East China Sea. The islands are known for their dramatic coastal scenery, pristine beaches, and unique Christian heritage — Hidden Christians (Kakure Kirishitan) maintained their faith in secret here for centuries during the persecution. Several churches have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Goto Islands offer a remote, beautiful escape with crystal-clear waters. Spring and autumn are the best seasons; summer is good for swimming.
