Ainan

Ainan (愛南) is a town in southwestern Ehime Prefecture, located on the Uwa Sea coast at the southern tip of the prefecture. It is a rural area of fishing villages, citrus orchards, and scenic coastline. Formed in 2004 from the merger of several towns and villages, Ainan is off the main tourist trail and offers a genuine look at coastal Shikoku life. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons.

Matsuyama Airport (MYJ) is about 2 hours north. Kochi Airport (KCZ) is about 2.5 hours east.

By Train

Ainan has no railway station. The nearest train stations are in Yawatahama (JR Yosan Line) or Uwajima (JR Yosan Line), about 1 hour away by bus.

By Car / Road

Route 56 runs through Ainan along the coast. From Matsuyama it's about 2 hours by car. From Uwajima it's about 1 hour.

A car is absolutely essential. Public transport is very limited.

Small seafood restaurants along the coast serve the day's catch. Local specialties include sea bream, octopus, and citrus-flavored dishes.

Tap water is safe. Fresh citrus juice and local sake.

• Budget: Small minshuku and guesthouses, ¥4,000–7,000.
• Mid-range: Small inns with ocean views, ¥7,000–12,000.
• Upscale: Limited; most visitors stay in Uwajima or Matsuyama.

Fresh seafood, citrus products, and local crafts are available at roadside stations.

• Uwajima — 1 hour north, with Uwajima Castle and bullfighting.
• Yawatahama — 1.5 hours north, a port city with ferry to Kyushu.
• Sukumo (Kochi) — East into Kochi Prefecture, a coastal city with a scenic harbor.
• Matsuyama — 2 hours north, with Dogo Onsen.
