Panicale
Umbria, Italy
Why visit Panicale?
Panicale is a small walled hill town in the province of Perugia, overlooking Lake Trasimeno from the slopes of Monte Petrarvella. It grew from a medieval castle built to defend the lake's southern shore, and its historic centre still follows that defensive layout: a walled hamlet with three main squares, each on a different level and each historically tied to a different kind of power (civic, religious, political), connected by a single main street. The town gave its name to the Renaissance painter Masolino da Panicale, whose fresco of the Annunciation can be seen in the town's collegiate church.
